Hurghada, a stunning resort town on the Red Sea coast, is known for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and a plethora of aquatic activities. But beyond its beaches and diving spots, the city also offers an incredible experience for nature lovers and families: the Grand Aquarium. This modern marvel provides an immersive journey into the natural world, allowing visitors to explore the mysteries of the deep sea, the lush greenery of the rainforest, and the captivating charm of a zoo, all under one roof.

is it worth it

Yes, a trip to the Grand Aquarium in Hurghada was worth every penny for us!

While we usually fall for those tourists traps, this is something I absolutely do not regret spending money on. It had exceeded my expectations in terms of decor and animals.

I was prepared to just place this on my list of things I regret wasting my time on (and money), but I’m just glad I went.

The Aquarium is not actually just an aquarium, you’ll see below. You can see that they actually made an effort to create and maintain the place, and that just put a big smile on my face. Needless to say, the two kids we were with had fun exploring!

Location

The Grand Aquarium is conveniently located in the heart of Hurghada, making it easily accessible for both locals and tourists. It is situated on Village Road, a prominent area in the city that is home to various resorts and hotels. Some nearby landmarks include the Hilton Hurghada Resort, Steigenberger Al Dau Beach Hotel, and the Desert Rose Resort. These hotels are all within a short distance, making the Grand Aquarium an ideal destination for guests staying in the vicinity.

For those unfamiliar with Hurghada, the aquarium’s location on Village Road is a central spot that’s easy to find. It’s about a 10-minute drive from the Hurghada International Airport and around 20 minutes from the city’s old town (El Dahar), making it a convenient excursion regardless of where you’re staying.

Sections of the Aquarium

The Grand Aquarium is divided into three main sections: the Rainforest, the Zoo, and the Aquarium. Each section offers a unique and educational experience, showcasing different aspects of the natural world.

Rainforest: Entering the Rainforest section feels like stepping into another world. This area is a lush, green paradise, filled with the sights and sounds of a tropical rainforest. The environment is carefully controlled to mimic the humid conditions of a real jungle, providing a home to a variety of exotic plants and animals.

  • Flora and Fauna: The Rainforest section is home to a wide array of plant species, including towering trees, thick vines, and vibrant flowers. Among the animals, you can find various species of birds, insects, and amphibians.
  • Interactive Experience: Some parts of the Rainforest are designed for interaction, allowing visitors to get closer to the animals. For example, there are designated feeding times where guests can feed the birds or interact with other small creatures under the supervision of trained staff.

Zoo: The Zoo section of the Grand Aquarium is a favorite among families, offering a chance to see a variety of animals from different habitats around the world. Although smaller than traditional zoos, this section provides an intimate setting where visitors can observe the animals up close.

  • Animal Exhibits: The Zoo features a range of animals, including reptiles like crocodiles and turtles, mammals like monkeys and a variety of birds. One of the highlights is the reptile house, where you can see different species of snakes, lizards, and even some rare reptiles.
  • Educational Displays: Throughout the Zoo, there are informative displays and guides that provide insights into the animals’ natural habitats, behaviors, and conservation status. This makes it an educational experience for both children and adults, encouraging a greater understanding and appreciation of wildlife.

Aquarium: The Aquarium is undoubtedly the centerpiece of the Grand Aquarium. It showcases the rich marine life of the Red Sea and beyond, offering a mesmerizing underwater experience.

  • Marine Life: The Aquarium houses over 1,200 species of marine animals, including a variety of fish, sharks, rays, and more. One of the standout features is the 24-meter-long tunnel that runs through the main tank, allowing visitors to walk beneath a massive aquarium filled with sharks, stingrays, and schools of fish. The panoramic views provide an unparalleled underwater experience, making you feel as though you’re diving without getting wet.
  • Thematic Exhibits: Each tank in the Aquarium is designed to replicate different marine environments, from the shallow coral reefs to the deep ocean. Visitors can observe everything from tiny, colorful reef fish to large predators like sharks. There are also dedicated tanks for jellyfish, seahorses, and other unique marine creatures.
